During a dynamic discussion, panelists shared strategies to empower proximate leaders, remove structural barriers and build the capacity of grassroots organizations, and shift mental models to challenge assumptions and strengthen nonprofit-funder relationships. Following the panel, we heard case studies highlighting local examples of systems change, and participants exchanged ideas and insights in small group discussions.

John H. Jackson
President and CEO, Schott Foundation for Public Education

Dr. John H. Jackson is President and CEO of the Schott Foundation for Public Education. In this role, Dr. Jackson leads the Foundation’s efforts to ensure a fair and substantive opportunity to learn for all students regardless of race or gender. Dr. Jackson joined the Schott Foundation after serving in several senior level positions. Among them, National Director of Education and Chief Policy Officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 2000-2007. In 1999, President William Jefferson Clinton appointed Dr. Jackson to serve as Senior Policy Advisor in the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Jackson has served as an Adjunct Professor of Race, Gender, and Public Policy at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute. Earlier in his career, Dr. Jackson conducted extensive research at the Harvard Civil Rights Project on civil rights and opportunity gap issues. Dr. Jackson also served on the Obama-Biden transition team as a member of the President’s 13-member Education Policy Transition Work Group.

Tulaine Montgomery
Co-CEO, New Profit

Tulaine Montgomery is an entrepreneur, educator, writer and organizer. Tulaine is currently Co-CEO of New Profit, a venture philanthropy organization that backs visionary leaders who are scaling innovations and transforming our nation’s broken and inequitable systems. At New Profit, Tulaine has led initiatives focused on strengthening education-to-employment pathways for underserved youth, driving resources and support to entrepreneurs who have been directly impacted by the American legal system, and building a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization and philanthropic sector. Tulaine was also the lead architect of New Profit’s Inclusive Impact strategy and Proximate Capital fund, which seeks to bridge the resource gap faced by Black, Latino/a/x, Indigenous, rural and other underinvested social entrepreneurs. Tulaine is a trusted advisor to nonprofit organizations and socially responsible companies and serves as the Board Chair for GirlTrek, the largest public health nonprofit for African-American women and girls in the nation. Her other board positions include Beyond 12, YouthBuild, College for Social Innovation, and Jitegemee (a youth-serving organization in Kenya).

John S. Watson, Jr.
Co-Executive Director, New Jersey Conservation Foundation

John “Jay” Watson, Jr., one of three Co-Executive Directors of the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, has worked to protect New Jersey’s landscape and environment for over 40 years. Prior to joining the nonprofit land conservancy sector, Jay spent nearly 30 years at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, retiring as Deputy Commissioner in 2010. During his tenure at NJDEP, he managed conservation and environmental projects across New Jersey’s diverse landscape and played a part in the protection and enhancement of many special places. Throughout his career, Jay has advocated for protecting natural lands and habitats throughout New Jersey, as well as enhancing the environment and quality of life in the state’s urban areas and communities of color. A former trustee of the Princeton Area Community Foundation, Lawrence Hopewell Trail Corp. and Isles Inc., he currently serves as trustee or advisor to the Outdoor Equity Alliance, Truehart Productions and is a Bunbury Fund Advisor.

Dana Kawaoka-Chen
Co-Director and founding Executive Director, Justice Funders

As Co-Director of Justice Funders, Dana Kawaoka-Chen partners and guides philanthropy in reimagining practices that advance a thriving and just world. Dana leads with vision and is guided by relationships. As a practitioner, Dana co-authored the “The Choir Book: A Framework for Social Justice Philanthropy,” and was a primary contributor to “Resonance: A Framework for Philanthropic Transformation.” You can find her writing on a Just Transition for Philanthropy in Medium. As founding Executive Director of Justice Funders, Dana grew the organization by aligning its strategy to the visions of movements working for racial, economic and social justice. Dana’s leadership in facilitating a Just Transition for philanthropy by redistributing wealth, democratizing power and shifting economic control to communities has resulted in millions of philanthropic dollars being mobilized and aligned to build infrastructure for frontline communities to govern themselves.
